Ferrara delighted as Man Utd striker Macheda nets Italy U21 winner against England

Italy U21 coach Ciro Ferrara was delighted with victory over England last night.

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda converted a late penalty to decide the match at Empoli's Stadio Castellani.

"It bodes well, especially considering the effort put in by my squad," said ex-Juventus boss Ferrara.

"We struggled in some moments, England are very strong, have players of a high quality and the difference in age was notable at times.

"Italy can still improve in terms of the style of football, but I am satisfied. A victory is important, as it allows you to work with a more relaxed state of mind and increase self-confidence.

"However, we must also evaluate the negative aspects of the game. Recently we've had to make a lot of changes due to injuries, but at least it allows me to view other lads in action.

"Nobody underestimated this friendly match, as they all showed how much they care about the Nazionale and that is to be cherished."
