Fernandinho admits he only ended up at Manchester City because they were the one club willing to meet Shakhtar Donetsk's asking price.
The Brazil midfielder has impressed in his first season in England.
"City was not the only club interested last summer, but it is the only one who made an offer. Shakhtar would not let me go, because I was a leader there.
"There were months of intense negotiations, but the Ukrainians understood that they had to let me go so I could realize my dream," said Fernandinho.
On his World Cup hopes, he added: "The World Cup is my great goal. I want to convince Luiz Felipe Scolari by continuing to play well and winning trophies with City."
