Fernandez adamant Swansea not giving up relegation battle

Swansea City captain Federico Fernandez is aware his side face a difficult challenge of maintaining Premier League status following a disappointing 1-0 home loss to direct rivals Southampton on Tuesday.

"We know we lost out on a huge opportunity against Southampton," the skipper said. "We are now depending on others.

"We fought and pushed hard but didn't score. I'm disappointed for the squad and for the fans."

The Swans now need to beat Stoke on the last day and need Huddersfield Town to lose both of their remaining fixtures, against Chelsea and Arsenal, to stay up.

Catching up with Southampton is another option, but the Saints have a significantly superior goal difference on top of the three point advantage.

Fernandez is still hopeful however, and says the players will fight for the club and the fans.

He added: "We'll see what happens with Huddersfield, but we must win against Stoke for ourselves, the fans and the club.

"The fans have been magnificent over the past couple of games and we owe it to them."
