Barry Ferguson's Rangers career is in crisis. Ferguson could have played his last game for Rangers after being stripped of the captaincy today.

The midfielder, 31, was sent home from training along with goalkeeper Allan McGregor as punishment for being photographed appearing to flick the 'V' sign during Scotland's victory over Iceland on Wednesday night.

Both players were dropped to the bench for the World Cup qualifier by manager George Burley after taking part in a late-night drinking session following Saturday night's defeat in Holland.

Ferguson, who is captain for both his club and country, and McGregor have also been summoned to a meeting with Rangers chief executive Martin Bain this afternoon.

The club will issue a statement after that meeting, which is expected to finish at around 4pm.

It is understood Rangers will look to inflict the maximum punishment on both players of a two-week fine and ban, while it is likely they will be sold in the summer.

Manager Walter Smith today refused to speculate on the outcome of the meeting but did confirm the disciplinary action taken today was for the alleged 'V' signs more than the drinking controversy.

He said of the latter: "We were unhappy about that situation but that was something for George to act on.

"The more disappointing aspect for us was the subsequent action on the bench on Wednesday night.

"From the club's point of view, that was not a good image to project."
