Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has defended the strength of his midfield stocks.

United have been eyeing midfielders for two seasons since Paul Scholes announced he was retiring.

But Fergie said: "People say we are short in midfield but I have Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Anderson.

"So we are not so bad. Carrick and Cleverley were the two against Sunderland last weekend and they did well together."
