Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that he prevented Wayne Rooney from earning more than him.
Rooney was set to be handed a bumper contract by United in the summer of 2010 after the striker threatened to leave the club.
United were ready to pay over the odds in order to keep Rooney at Old Trafford but Ferguson has now revealed that he prevented it from happening.
In his new book, Leading, Ferguson said: "When the Glazers... agreed to a big increase in Wayne Rooney's salary in 2010, they wanted to know how I felt.
"I told them I did not think it fair that Rooney should earn twice what I made and Joel Glazer immediately said: 'I totally agree with you but what should we do?' It was simple. We just agreed no player should be paid more than me."
