Sir Alex Ferguson is set to have a say in Wigan Athletic's next managerial appointment.
The Daily Star says the Latics are searching for a new manager after sacking Owen Coyle, who lasted less than half a season, on Sunday.
Now owner Dave Whelan could turn to former Manchester United No.2 Phelan, who has been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in the summer following Ferguson's retirement.
It is understood Whelan will consult close friend Fergie about Phelan's credentials before appointing a successor.
