Ferguson, Gill took charge of Man Utd negotiations for Mata

Sir Alex Ferguson and former Manchester United chief executive David Gill helped the club land Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata, it has been revealed. The Sunday Express says former boss Ferguson and ex-chief executive Gill spearheaded hush hush talks to secure Mata while attending last Sunday's Premier League clash with Jose Mourinho's side at Stamford Bridge.

Once manager David Moyes had approved the move for the Spaniard Ferguson and Gill swept into action using their contacts to seal a deal before leaving West London.

Gill's successor Ed Woodward has confessed some naivety over last summer's signings strategy and was happy to stand back and allow Ferguson and Gill to open some doors over Mata.
