Ferguson: Forget snipers, this squad as good as any I have had at Man Utd

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says the current squad is as good as any he has had in his 26 years at the club. Ferguson also hit out at snipers over the lack of flair in his team when writing the foreword for the Premier League Season 2010/11 Review.

He opined: "I must admit that when I arrived in Manchester from Aberdeen in 1986, I found it difficult to understand how a club of United's stature could have gone 26 years without winning the league. It became my driving ambition to rein in Liverpool and put my new club on the honours board.

"It took me a year or two, first winning the FA Cup and then the UEFA Cup-Winners' Cup, before finally netting a long-awaited championship. Looking back to our big breakthrough in 1993, I never envisaged that we would then storm away to overhaul Liverpool.

"We had a good team, built round the likes of Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce and down the years we have had other great sides, featuring so many outstanding players that I can hardly begin to list them.

"What I will say is that our present squad is as good as any we have had - and I say this despite a certain amount of sniping that our latest champions lack the flair and excitement of old.

"You play as well as the opposition allow you and, in my book, there is a strength in depth in the Premier League that limits the number of occasions when you can cut loose and, if you like, put on the style.

"It's a very tough and unrelenting league these days but we must have been doing something right, because we dropped only two points on our own ground in what for me was a thrilling season, with the Premier League recording the highest number of goals ever scored in a season."
