Ferguson admits Man Utd caused their own defeat

Manchester United caused their own demise in Tuesday night's quarter-final Champions League loss to Bayern Munich according to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils gave up an early lead after Wayne Rooney put them ahead after two minutes when Franck Ribery sent in a deflected free-kick with just 14 minutes remaining and then Ivica Olic pounced on a Patrice Evra mistake to score the winner in the final minute.

Ferguson said the team caused the defeat for themselves, labelling the final goal as a 'terrible' mistake.

"We didn't play well enough to be honest, we kept giving the ball away. We caused our own defeat," he told Sky Sports.

"Bayern were the better team, we can't complain about that, but we're better than that in possession. We kept giving it away and that was our downfall.

"The first goal was a bit of luck with a deflection but the last goal, I don't know how you describe it. The game was done and we gave a terrible goal away."
