Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wayne Rooney wanted Manchester United to buy Mesut Ozil. Rooney was impressed by Ozil at the 2010 World Cup and had encouraged Ferguson to sign the German, now a star with Arsenal.
Ferguson said at his book launch yesterday:
"Özil played wide right at Werder Bremen and then off the front in the second half of the season, he was part of the great under-21 team that then went to South Africa and played very well but had not been on our radar to have that type of player, a No 10 off the front. I explained to Wayne to leave the signing of the players to me.
"We got most things right over the years. We signed Javier Hernández that summer and my thoughts at the time were Javier Hernández and Wayne playing together.
