Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says a lack of self-belief held back Javier Hernandez at Old Trafford.
Chicharito, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen by former United boss Louis van Gaal for £8m two years ago, featured in his side's goalless Champions League draw against Tottenham last night.
“At United, he always felt there was someone in front of him," Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“With Rooney or Van Persie, United had strikers who would always be number one no matter what.
“That is a heavy weight on his shoulder. It was the same with Diego Forlan at United.
“He was a quality player but Ruud van Nistelrooy was ahead of him, so he lacked confidence when he got the opportunities.
“Hernandez scored goals - he put up good numbers.
“As a starter, he didn't always have the impact but that was largely from not having the confidence of the manager."
