Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has no doubts over the class of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Ferdinand is convinced Van Dijk would take long-term suitors Liverpool to a new level.

He explained on BT Sport: "I definitely think Virgil van Dijk would have made that team better. He would be the dominant central defender and I think he would be an excellent duo with Joël Matip.

"Dejan Lovren is not good enough in my eyes, he has shown too many mistakes over a long period of time. Alberto Moreno is not good enough in defensive terms. If he attacks, he's a pleasure to watch, but you want first of all for him to be good as a defender. He does not succeed. If two of your four defenders are not good enough, it will be difficult."
