Ferdinand: Tevez upbringing will help him at Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand says Carlos Tevez's tough upbringing will help him settle quickly at Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Argentina striker has scarring from his right ear, down his neck to his chest from being scalded with boiling water when 10 months old. The accident put him in intensive care for two months.

Ferdinand, who grew up on a council estate in Peckham, believes the fact Tevez had to fight for everything and overcome adversity shows his strength of character.

"I've heard Carlos comes from quite a hard background and that always stands people in good stead," he said. "I've also spoken to my brother and some of the other West Ham lads and they've told me about his quality."

Tevez will be registered in time for United's opener against Reading on Sunday, but a lack of preseason training means his debut is likely to be on August 19 - in the derby with Manchester City.
