Rio Ferdinand will wait until the summer before discussing new terms with Manchester United. The Sunday Mirror says the defender has 18 months on his contract, but for more than a season injuries have negated his ability to start games regularly.

This is illustrated by the fact Ferdinand's start against Swansea in the Premier League yesterday was only the first time in 2011 that he has started three consecutive games.

Sir Alex Ferguson recently stated that he was no longer first choice at the heart of the defence.

And privately Ferdinand realises the development of Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling, coupled with the arrival of Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers, means he faces a fight to save his career at the club.
