Lionel Messi produced one of the worst performances of his career as Barcelona were thumped by PSG on Tuesday night.

The Argentine maestro was well below his best as the Catalan giants lost 4-0 at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard felt Messi was 'sloppy' and 'showed zero effort' in what was a very uncharacteristic display.

Referring to Messi giving away the ball in midfield which lead to PSG's second goal, Ferdinand said on BT Sport:"His reaction there was poor.

"All night he was sloppy.

"He looked dejected and bereft of ideas, [but] he's human."

Gerrard added: "He showed zero effort. No reaction all night."
