Rio Ferdinand was delighted to see Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney grab his first goal of the season against Roma.

Ferdinand said: "Wayne's goal against Roma was brilliant.

"It was a fantastic finish, a quick strike which fooled the keeper. The more of those the better - not just for us but for England.

"A fit and firing Wayne Rooney is a massive bonus to any side.

"And the fact he's back for England is great news. I just hope he can bring his United form into the England matches as we need him to get through two tough qualifiers."
