"He is a player who can get goals and he could link up well with Michael Owen, not to mention last season's top goalscorer Oba Martins.
"In those three, plus Shola Ameobi and young Andy Carroll, you will have a tremendous amount of competition for places which you do need at a club like Newcastle United."
Meanwhile, Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp declared: "It'll be shame if we don't get Mark Viduka. He's the only forward I've really spoken to and gone for so far.
"He's a quality player - a proper footballer. He knows what he's doing, holds the ball up and scores goals.
"I've not had a "no" yet from Mark, but it looks like he could be going to Newcastle.
"He lives up in Wetherby in Yorkshire, so he can get to Newcastle easily from there. It's hard to compete with that."
