Fellaini or Rashford? Mourinho explains Man Utd change

Jose Mourinho has revealed why he went with Marouane Fellaini over Marcus Rashford on Sunday.

The Manchester United boss had already made two changes before he opted to bring on towering Belgian midfielder Fellaini for Matteo Darmian in the 76th minute of the north-west derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has speedy attacker Rashford ready to go but decided to bring on Fellaini as at the time, Liverpool were defending their one-goal lead with all their might.

He said at his post-match press conference: "I had one more option: Fellaini or Rashford.

"But I saw so many yellow shirts in the box, in front of the box, that I thought probably my players would lose a bit of the emotional balance and would go for a more direct approach.

"To go with a more direct approach, it has to be with Marouane and he was an important player for us."

It worked a treat as Fellaini's late header bounced off the post to Antonio Valencia who popped up a lovely little cross for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to head home in the 84th minute to force a 1-1 draw.
