FC Twente's Carney looking forward to the future

FC Twente's David Carney is already looking forward to next season with the club. The 26-year old was a key member of the Twente squad that took out last season's Dutch Eredivisie title and Carney is already excited about the prospect of defending that crown doubled with Champions League football next season.

"Playing international football helped me massively going there," he said.

"Learning the Dutch way with Pim Verbeek helped me go to FC Twente and I just gradually improved as I got there.

"It's the first time the club have been champions of Holland.

"Champions League is something to look forward to as well, so hopefully, I can have a good World Cup and look forward to the future as well."

Carney is currently preparing for the World Cup, which for Australia kicks off on Monday morning Australian time against Germany, and although he knows he will not be in the starting line-up for that match is working hard so if he is called upon, he is ready to go for his country.

"Pim uses me as a left winger as well when they need me to come on and give energy, and FC Twente do that as well," he added.

"You're pretty aware of what players are going to start - that's not rocket science.

"But for players who are around the team you've got to just knuckle down, give everything, and then just hope. You've got to fight."
