There was crowd trouble at half-time when around 30 West Ham fans entered the north-east corner of the stadium where the Crew's most vocal fans were congregated, prompting provocative chants and some fighting between the two groups.
The scuffles were quickly dealt with when Columbus police officers and Crew Stadium security staff moved in to separate the rival fans.
Highway Patrol officers reportedly arrested one fan outside the stadium for disorderly conduct, but police would not confirm whether any arrests had been made inside the ground.
