FA technical director Dan Ashworth has refuted suggestions that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was first choice to become the new England manager ahead of Sam Allardyce.
Ashworth is adamant that was not the case and claims that Wenger was the organisation's preferred option are wide of the mark. "No. We only offered the job to one person and we offered the job to Sam [Allardyce], obviously.
"And he was delighted to accept it," he told TalkSPORT. "There were a lot of rumours about who was favourite and who wasn't.
"In fact, I think there was a different favourite every day for a period of time but that [Wenger being first choice] was not the case at all," added the 45-year-old.
