Sunderland survived a tricky tie at Championship Peterborough by scoring both goals in a 2-0 success in the second half. Martin O'Neill continues to revive the fortunes of the Black Cats since his appointment as manager with a fifth win in seven games.
Peterborough were still in the game at the break and whilst Sunderland had had the better chances the home side had also caused their Premiership opponents problems with swift counter attacks.
But once Sunderland scored twice in the opening 13 minute after half-time they simply played keep ball encouraging Posh to catch them on the break but top flight experience meant they saw the game out with few problems.
Sebastian Larsson opened the scoring when his in-swinging free kick deceived everybody, including keeper Joe Lewis, to find the back of the net.
Another Larsson set piece saw the Black Cats double their advantage as his corner was headed firmly home by Joe McClean.
With a two goal cushion the Black Cats clinically played out time as Peterborough were dumped out of the competition for the seventh time by Premiership opposition.
