Championship Reading shocked Everton at Goodison Park by progressing to the quarter finals of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over their Premiership opponents. The sole Championship survivors in the FA Cup continue their pursuit of cup glory after a narrow, but deserving win, over a disappointing Everton whose home support booed them off the pitch at the final whistle.
The Toffees must have been hoping for great things this year from the competition after dumping the holders Chelsea out in the last round. But somehow the passion and commitment of that tie never happened against the Royals.
Yet for the opening half-hour the host's were in the ascendancy but failed to take advantage and were punished on 26 minutes.
Defender matt Mills was in the right place after his initial goalbound header fell kindly for him to rifle home from 12 yards.
Everton went closest when Royals keeper Alex McCarthy made a brilliant one-handed save from Leon Osman but other than that for all the home side's pressure they rarely looked like taking the game to a replay.
Osman and Seamus Coleman also headed narrowly wide for the Toffees.
