FA CUP 4th ROUND REPLAY: West Brom break Peterborough hearts on penalties

West Bromwich Albion have advanced to the 5th round of the FA Cup with a narrow triumph over Peterborough United.

The Baggies needed some luck to get past the Posh as they drew 1-1 after extra-time at London Road, following the 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns in late January, before edging the League One side 4-3 on penalties.

Graham Westley's side were gallant in defeat and had a number of key performers on the night including talented midfield pair Martin Samuelsen and Chris Forrester while central defenders Michael Bostwick and Gabriel Zakuani were immense all night.

However, they came up short in the end after the two sides traded goals in the second half.

Peterborough hit Albion on the break in the 55th minute when Lee Angol supplied Jon Taylor at the top of the box, inviting the Posh attacker to take on James Chester and fire goal-ward from just inside the area. The ball took a slight deflection off the Albion centre-half and found its way past Ben Foster to give Peterborough a deserved lead.

Just over 15 minutes later, Albion had pulled it back to parity when James McClean overlapped down the left and played a dangerous ball into the box which was knocked into the path of Darren Fletcher by the Posh defence.

The 2004 FA Cup winner with Manchester United produced a stunning half-volley that gave Ben Alnwick absolutely no chance in Peterborough goal, levelling it up and setting the scene for a tense finish.

The home side continued to play their attacking brand at one end while snuffing out West Brom's attempts at the other and came close on a number occasions before the visitors had a golden opportunity to win it at the death.

Craig Gardner's free-kick from the right flank found Saido Berahino all by himself at the back post but the striker could not even hit the target with his free header, forcing the game into a shootout.

Samuelsen saw his tame effort saved by Foster before Fletcher, the most experienced player on the pitch, pulled his 12-yard attempt wide to give the Posh some hope.

But it was Foster who again came to the rescue for the Premier League outfit, denying youngster Angol, and sending his side through in the process.

Tony Pulis' men will next meet Reading at the Madejski Stadium on February 20 as Peterborough get set to chase a promotion play-off spot in England's third division.
