The English FA have played down talk of Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho almost taking the Three Lions job ahead of Fabio Capello.
The former Chelsea manager claimed this week he was within "hours" of taking the post.
The FA's response was swift.
"Fabio was our first choice for England manager," said a spokesman.
"We have made that clear from the outset."
