Southgate admits he aspires to one day manage the club he served as a top-class central defender from 1995 to 2001.
But the former England centre half insists he is happy sticking with his media duties and working for the FA as Head of Elite Development for the time being.
He told the Sunday Mercury: "I've got a job with the FA to do that I enjoy. I'm trying to make a difference, and that will be the case for the next 14 months or so.
"I'm learning a tremendous amount and I don't rule out returning or managing the club. But I'm not going to go from a position I'm in now to getting the job at Villa.
"Club management is not something I'm thinking about at all at the moment.
"I'm sure it will be a great job for somebody though."
