Expectant Melbourne defender Kemp hopes new addition improves game

Melbourne Victory defender Matthew Kemp may have to miss an A-League match at the start of the new season.

The former Adelaide United man's wife Steph is due to give birth to their first child in mid-August and if the impending birth is to clash with a match, Kemp knows where he will be.

"We're expecting it any time soon and it's really exciting," Kemp said. "We'll wait and see how that goes.

"It could come any time so I've got the physio holding my phone (during training) and waiting for that call to come through.

"The club's really good with these things and they've told me I'm not going to miss the birth," Kemp added.

"If that happens we've got a big squad and a lot of depth so there's plenty of cover."

Some of Kemp's teammates have told him that having kids has helped them improve their game and he is hoping for the same outcome.

"The boys reckon having kids has made them better players so I'm going to run with that and hope it improves my game," Kemp said.

"All the nights without sleep, it's going to be tough, but I'm just really excited about having the little one along."
