EXCLUSIVE: Ex-Liverpool keeper Oldfield backs Ryan to succeed at Brighton despite Krul signing

Mathew Ryan will thrive under the pressure now that Tim Krul has arrived at Brighton and Hove Albion, according to former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Oldfield.

The Seagulls bought Ryan from Valencia for a then club-record fee this summer, however, manager Chris Hughton sought to provide competition for the Australia international.

Eventually, Newcastle stalwart Tim Krul arrived on loan on deadline day, but Oldfield believes Ryan will embrace the challenge that the Dutchman will bring.

"Mat Ryan will feel a little bit of pressure with Tim Krul arriving," Oldfield exclusively told Tribalfootball.

"However some keepers thrive off pressure and I can't see Matt Ryan being any different.

"Sometimes it's what is needed to kick into the next gear. What I have been told about Matt Ryan from his old keeper coach John Crawley is that he is a very hard worker."

"I have had to compete with keepers before for number 1 spot and it's about being patient and continuous hard work. Everyone gets a chance sometime in there career it's about being ready."
