EXCLUSIVE: Edwards reveals '2 best individual Man Utd performances I saw as chairman'

Martin Edwards has listed the two greatest performances by a Manchester United player that he witnessed during his 22-year stint with the club.

The former chairman, who served at the helm between 1980 and 2002, has listed Bryan Robson's 1984 European Cup Winners Cup quarter-final second leg against Barcelona, and Roy Keane's famous 1999 Champions League semi-final second leg against Juventus.

The former resulted in United advancing to the semi-finals of the Cup Winners Cup after bouncing back from a 2-0 deficit in the first leg to win 3-2 in the second thanks to a brace from the skipper Robson. United eventually fall to Juve in the next round.

Similarly, Keane's goal when United were 2-0 down in Turin brought his team back to life. But it was his effort after he was booked - which meant he would miss the final - that etched him United folklore as Sir Alex's troops marched to a 3-2 victory and eventually won the final against Bayern Munich.

On Robson's performance, Edwards exclusively told Tribal Football: "It equals the best I've ever seen.

"I mean obviously Roy Keane's performance against Juventus when we were 2-0 down and we came back to win. He got booked and couldn't play in the final but his performance in the semi final was fantastic.

"But Robson's performance against Barcelona in the 84' European Cup Winners Cup final quarter-final was for me was as good as anything I've seen in a United shirt.

"He was absolutely fantastic that night. We were 2-0 down and we had to win by three clear goals and he scored two of them. What a great all around performance by him it was unbelievable."

Edwards is currently promoting his book, Red Glory : Manchester United and Me. It details the former Manchester United chairman's 22-year stint at the club, where he took the value of the club from £2million in 1980 to £2billion by the time he left in 2002. Edwards was also the man who hired Sir Alex Ferguson, who would win eight Premier League titles, six FA Cups and a Champions League while Edwards was at the club.
