Former West Ham United superkid Billy Mehmet made an instant impact for Perth Glory tonight - bravely heading home the only goal of the game to beat A-League favourites Adelaide United.

Mehmet, who signed for Glory after two lucrative years in Turkish football, was impressive in the 1-0 triumph alongside former Celtic and Manchester United midfielder Liam Miller and Brazilian winter signing Andrezinho.

Mehmet, 27, looked set to bag a double after surging towards goal in the 89th minute, but the Englishman was denied by an excellent fingertip save from Adelaide 'keeper Eugene Galekovic.

The Rangers management duo of Ian Ferguson and Stuart Munro will be delighted with Glory's performance, having had Adelaide on the rack for much of the first-half through Andrezinho's wing play.

Glory were further lifted in the final minutes as experienced centre-half and another former Hammer, Chris Coyne, made a welcome appearance.
