Ex-West Ham captain Neill backing Aussie bid for Man Utd legend Ferguson

Former West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers captain Lucas Neill has backed calls for Australia to go for Sir Alex Ferguson as their World Cup coach.

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich floated the prospect yesterday after the amazing dismissal of Holger Osieck.

And Aussie captain Neill admitted he simply wants "the best" for the job - and there's no better than Ferguson, deemed the greatest manager who has ever lived.

Neill has also challenged the Australian coaches to go abroad to prove their worth.

He added "Footballers from Australia in the last 20 years have gone over and challenged themselves to be the best players they can be on behalf of their country.

"We need coaches now to have that ambition to yes, coach in Australia, but then go and see if they can go and crack the big-time in Europe, just like the players did."
