Former West Ham United and Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley insists English players can pass the ball.
England are undergoing another internal review after their Euros failure.
Curbishley said: "We see it week-in, week-out with our players in the Premier League, but we don't quite see it when they play for their country.
"They have to have the confidence. I look at Swansea last year who came up into the Premier League, Brendan Rodgers encouraged his players to pass the ball, take care of the ball and keep possession.
"They went and did it in the Premier League. If you encourage it then you will have a chance and I'm sure Roy Hodgson will start looking down that route."
