Former Aston Villa boss Graham Taylor says he was dead against the formation of the Premier League.
The former Villa and England manager revealed he refused to support the formation of the new Premier League when he was England boss.
"The pace of the game is the biggest thing when people talk about how it used to be," Taylor told the Sunday Mercury.
"But I would always say: 'Look at the state and the quality of the pitches'.
"In my time as a player if you got off to a good start, you'd hear: 'Wait til the heavy pitches come'.
"Well, the heavy pitches don't come now, do they?
"I wouldn't want to give the impression I am a moaning old fella saying: 'It's all changed for the worse'. It has not.
"The one thing I am not happy with is the people who have come in and now owning our clubs be they British or foreign and they are owning them for the wrong reasons.
"They are owning them so they can get some celebrity status themselves and hopefully the club does this and everybody loves them. The one thing that has not changed is that there can only be one club that finishes at the top and as we have seen that is usually Manchester United.
"It just annoys me a little bit because I was the England manager when the Premier League was formed."
