Ex-Valencia, Barcelona midfielder Mendieta denied Middlesbrough rumours

Gaizka Mendieta has denied claims that he is set to join Middlesbrough as an assistant to new manager Aitor Karanka.

Former Real Madrid no.2 Karankawas unveiled by Boro on Wednesday with speculation soon following that ex-Riverside Stadium midfielder Mendieta, who starred for Valencia in the 1990s, was set to return to the north east.

But the 39-year old, who also spent time with Barcelona, said nothing of the sort was on the cards.

"There has not been any contact at the moment," he told Sky Sports News Radio.

"We played together in the Under-21s and Olympics and we had a few years together, after that we played against each other and in the Spain national team so yeah we know each other quite well."

Mendieta added: "It is something that has not happened and if it does happen in the future I will consider the options but there is nothing on the table.

"I am getting my badges at the moment and is something I would like to do eventually in the future, when and how only time and circumstance can determine that."
