Ex-Valencia, Barcelona ace Villa 'proud' to be handed NYCFC captaincy

New York City FC have announced the appointment of David Villa as their inaugural captain.

The 33-year old Spanish striker, who signed with NYCFC from Atletico Madrid in in June last year, has been handed the captain's armband on the eve of the club's debut season in MLS in 2015.

Spain's all-time leading goalscorer was signed as a Designated Player by City after spending one season with Atletico before a short loan with A-League club Melbourne City.

The former Valencia and Barcelona star was thrilled to be given the responsibility of leading New York's second club as they continue to prepare for their debut campaign.

"I am honoured to be your captain. I am proud to wear this armband," said Villa in a short statement on NYCF's official website.

NYCFC's season begins on March 8 with a trip to Florida to take on fellow expansion side Orlando City SC at the 65,000-capacity Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando.
