Ex-Tottenham, Sunderland midfielder Tainio’s career could be over – NYRB’s Backe

New York Red Bull head coach Hans Backe suggests that Teemu Tainio’s career could be finished.

New York Red Bull head coach Hans Backe suggests that Teemu Tainio’s career could be finished.

The Finnish midfielder has been sidelined since early in the 2012 MLS season with yet another knee injury and Backe says that possible surgery could prematurely finish his playing days.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised,” Backe said of the former Auxerre, Tottenham, Sunderland and Ajax man.

“That’s why we took the decision not to have the surgery and tried to get the injections to heal the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

“But we’re talking still six weeks probably to get an answer if it will work, then to get in shape after that being out for two or three months. But I think it was the right decision, because if he goes with the surgery it will probably be career-ending.”
