Former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt has supported Harry Redknapp's appointment at White Hart Lane.

Mabbutt told BBC Radio Five Live: "Harry will certainly relish the job, he did a great job at West Ham and Portsmouth but he's always been hankering for a job like this.

"I think he comes across very well, his style of football is very good.

"I've been in touch with the Tottenham board over the last couple of weeks and they were fully supportive of Ramos up to the last few days.

"I believe that after eight games of the season, I think it could be a bit premature, a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

"But the board have been working far closer with the management team than I have."

Mabbutt added: "Of course it's a club in panic. We're bottom of the table, two points out of 24 and we haven't won this season.

"There are problems, there are concerns, and those concerns have obviously brought this decision upon the board.

"They feel they can no longer keep the management team in place because they feel that by bringing in somebody else, Harry Redknapp, that will change things and hopefully get us out of this situation."
