Ex-Tottenham director Comolli: 'My' players can be best in the world

Former Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli says he loves it when football people around Europe come up to him and congratulate him on putting together a strong squad at White Hart Lane.

The Frenchman, now sporting director at Saint Etienne, was at Tottenham in between 2005 and 2008 and takes credit for the group he has mustered for Harry Redknapp, some of which he believes can be the best in the world.

"The talent at the club is unbelievable," said Comolli. "They can challenge to win the Premier League, maybe this season or within the next two or three years.

"If you take position by position the quality of the players at Spurs, there are not many who are better than them. I expect some of them to go to the very top of world football.

"I am happy when football people around Europe come to me and say they're my players and that they're doing well. It's a good feeling.

"I've had so much positive feedback since I've left and I hope people now understand what the job was all about.

"I'm also pleased that the players trusted what we told them at the time. We told them they'd be playing in the Champions League sooner rather than later. Modric had all the major clubs after him and it was great for him to trust us.

"They will definitely qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. If they keep the same team together, the players are really young. There are key players like Modric, Bale and Tom Huddlestone who are not even 26, and Gomes is just reaching his peak now."
