Ex-Toronto boss Carver: Beckham law working against MLS

Former Toronto FC coach John Carver says MLS's David Beckham transfer rule is working against clubs. Carver, who sensationally resigned last weekend from Toronto, told the Evening Chronicle: "You only get one designated player.

"It's crazy you have David Beckham earning millions but a young kid on $17,000.

"Where is the common sense in that?"

However, Carver was grateful that the MLS did give him the opportunity to enhance his reputation after rebuilding a similar backroom set-up to the one he helped develop at Newcastle with Sir Bobby Robson and Geordie strength and fitness coach Paul Winsper, who was his right-hand man at Toronto.

He said: "It gave me an opportunity to build something from scratch.

"We were rock bottom when I arrived and top when I left."
