Former Sunderland goalkeeper Chris Turner is confident they'll fight back from Saturday's rout.
Sunderland are reeling after their 8-0 thrashing by Southampton.
Turner was in goal 32 years ago when Watford thrashed Sunderland 8-0 which equalled the club's worst-ever defeat.
The former Manchester United No1 Turner said: "It's important the players don't start feeling too sorry for themselves.
"They must lick their wounds, dust themselves down, roll up their sleeves and bounce back.
"Of course, that's easier said than done but it is just one defeat, albeit a nasty one.
"That's how we looked at it all those years ago. Of course, we were bitterly disappointed but there were no knee-jerk reactions just a grim determination to put things right which we did in our next game."
