Ex-Sunderland, Burnley defender Caldwell admits disappointing 2014 for Toronto

Toronto FC captain Steven Caldwell acknowledges that the 2014 MLS season has been substandard for the Canadian club.

The former Newcastle United, Sunderland, Burnley and Birmingham City centre-back has been a major part of the Reds line-up this campaign but admits it has been a disappointing result to be sitting six points out of the play-offs with two regular season matches remaining.

"I think overall we've let ourselves down," Caldwell told the Toronto Star.

"As a group of players and as a football club, we should have been in a better position than we're in so we all have to look individually, honestly at ourselves in the mirror and ask what we could have done better.

"Personally and as a team, we feel that we left a lot of games out there."

Caldwell's TFC had plenty to be positive about prior to the 2014 MLS season with the off-season signings of Jermain Defoe, Michael Bradley, Gilberto, Bradley Orr and Dwayne De Rosario but now look likely to miss the play-offs.

The Greg Vanney-coached side sit sixth on the Eastern Conference table, behind Columbus Crew, who are two wins ahead with just two fixtures left.
