Tottenham hero Gary Mabbutt feels the current team is the best of modern times.

Spurs have qualified for the Champions League after finishing an impressive third in the Premier League last season.

Ex-Spurs skipper Mabbutt, 54, told the Daily Star: “The signs are very good because the core of our squad is made up of very talented youngsters.

“And you look at what is around them. You have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Hugo Lloris.

"Then at the back with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, they have one of the best partnerships in the league.

“What the manager's done so well is nurture a lot of excellent talent into a team. I haven't seen anything that good at Tottenham for quite a while.

“They play with energy, passion, hunger and quality – not for themselves but for the team. We have very good foundations to build upon."
