Ex-Southampton, Man City striker Wright-Phillips three goals from MLS record

New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips is just three goals from equaling the MLS record for goals in a calendar year.

The former Southampton and Manchester City forward has a total of 30 goals in MLS in 2014 which has him within a treble of leveling Roy Lassiter's long-standing record of 33.

Wright-Phillips equaled Lassiter and Chris Wondolowski's regular season record of 27 before adding a further three in the first two play-off matches for the Red Bulls who beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1 at the end of October before lodging a 2-0 win over DC United in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semi-finals last weekend.

The goal against DC propelled 'BWP' past Stern John and Raul Diaz Arce's total of 29 and has him sitting two goals behind LA Galaxy great Carlos Ruiz's 2002 tally of 32 and three in arrears of Lassiter's 1996 record which was set when playing for Tampa Bay.
