Ex-Southampton, Man City striker Wright-Phillips: Don't expect me to be Thierry Henry

Bradley Wright-Phillips has warned supporters not to regularly expect the same sort of form as he produced for New York Red Bulls in 2014.

The 30-year old English striker netted a joint-record 27 regular season goals before adding four more in the play-offs to finish the campaign with a stunning tally of 31.

Wright-Phillips, formerly of Southampton, Manchester City and Charlton Athletic, was rewarded by the Red Bulls when signed as a Designated Player late last year but he is hoping there are not too many more expectations placed upon his shoulders after his brilliant campaign.

"If they're expecting something more, they will be disappointed, I can let you know that now," he told reporters.

"If you are expecting me to be Thierry Henry, you will be disappointed."

But Wright-Phillips insists he will work as hard as he can to try and fill the void left by Arsenal great Henry who retired at the culmination of the 2014 season.

"I hope it affects us in a positive way," he said of Henry's absence.

"The games we played when Thierry wasn't there, it made players step up more. You know you can't depend on Thierry to get you out of a situation. When he's there, sometimes you might be a bit half-hearted, thinking, 'He might get a free kick, he might put it in the top corner.'

"I feel like with Thierry going, how I'm going to look at it is I'm going to try and take more responsibility on the pitch so nobody has to depend on one person."
