Ex-Red Star, Eintracht defender Petkovic lands Sydney prize

Nikola Petkovic has been named the Sydney FC Player of the Year for the 2013/14 A-League season.

The 28-year old Serbian defender has taken out the Sky Blues' top player award in his debut season with the club after joining from Red Star Belgrade in September last year.

Petkovic played every minute of every match for Sydney over the recent season and his efforts have been rewarded by the club's coaching staff.

"I'm honoured to have been chosen for this award," former Vojvodina and Eintracht Frankfurt man Petkovic said.

"It means a lot to be voted by the coaches as the Player of the Year and I would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to play for this big club.

"It has been a good year for me and I'm looking forward to hopefully winning the Championship next year and qualifying for the Asian Champions League."

In addition, Iraq international Ali Abbas was voted in as the Players' Player of the Year and Members' Player of the Year following his consistent performances in a variety of positions.
