Ex-Red Star Belgrade and Real Madrid star Jankovic keen on North Queensland Fury job

Former Red Star Belgrade, Real Madrid and Anderlecht midfielder Milan Jankovic has confirmed his interest in the vacant coaching role at North Queensland Fury.

The position was vacated when Ian Ferguson left to take up the assistant's position with Perth Glory last month and the 50-year old Serbian has revealed his interest in taking the reins at the second-year A-League club.

"I've not officially applied, but yes, I'm interested," Jankovic told The Cairns Post yesterday, http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2010/04/28/107321_local-sport-news.html

"I'm going to talk to Han Berger (who is on the FFA coaching appointment panel) in Sydney at the weekend and I'll see what to do after that."

Jankovic, who lives in Cairns, says there is a great opportunity for the Townsville-based club to gain traction in surrounding areas of North Queensland and plans to go down that path if he eventually gets the job.

"I don't think they really involved Cairns enough to bring in players or supporters," he said. "I understand how things work in regional Queensland and I think they need to work with Cairns, Mackay and the Northern Territory. I think it is important for the club to have a connection with the region and if you have local players that you develop, the club can make some income one day."
