Ex-Rapid Vienna striker Salihi: I was close to Old Firm before DC United move

DC United new boy Hamdi Salihi has revealed he was extremely close to making a move to Scotland prior to his shift to Major League Soccer.

The 28-year old Albanian striker joined DC late last month from Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna but said there was plenty of interest in his services from clubs elsewhere in Europe, particularly from Scotland's Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers.

"I had every day something new," Salihi said. "From Russia, Turkey, some clubs from Germany, but not big clubs.

"I was really close to Celtic and Glasgow Rangers, but they have really big problems with money.

"With everything I calculated in my head was that DC was the best opportunity."
