Sky Sports have reported that Dutch manager Dick Advocaat is on his way to Sunderland for talks about the managerial vacancy position at the Stadium of Light.
The Sunderland board have reportedly identified Advocaat as the man to lead their club into the relegation battle after sacking manager Gus Poyet earlier on Monday.
The Uruguayan was relieved of his duties in the aftermath of Saturday's 4-0 humiliating home defeat to Aston Villa which saw large numbers of the crowd leave early in disgust and hurl abuse at the Sunderland bench.
Poyet was the savior for Sunderland last season when he led the club to a remarkable run of results to avoid the drop to the Championship but in the end lasted only 17 months on the job.
According to reports, Advocaat is initially expected to be offered a short-term contract only until the end of the season.
Advocaat has been out of work since resigning as Serbia coach four months ago. The 67-year-old has previously won league titles with the likes of Rangers, Zenit Saint Petersburg and PSV Eindhoven.
