Portland Timbers are running the rule over Scottish defender Steven Smith as they look to strengthen their squad.
The 26-year old former Rangers, Norwich City and Preston North End left-back joined the Timbers for training on Monday as head coach John Spencer searches for some reinforcements to his defensive structures after subpar performances from the likes of Lovel Palmer, Rodney Wallace and Mike Chabala.
Smith is a former Rangers teammate of Timbers striker Kris Boyd and most recently played with English League One outfit Preston until his contract was terminated in April.
